When Norma Jean ran for office in 1986, she
wanted to make a statement which expressed her
libertarian views that each individual owns his or
her own body, and that the government does not have
the right to legislate the morality or private
behavior of consenting adults. What better way than
to say it with her own body?
She was prepared for any verbal attacks from her
opponents who might claim that she was using
"cheesecake" to solicit votes. During a press
conference at which her posters were unveiled, she
quipped, "If I have the 'cheesecake,' my
opponents (being male) have the 'beef' and
it's all 'bull'!"
She used humor throughout her campaign to disarm
those who might criticize the Libertarian Party for
endorsing a prostitute candidate for office "What's
the difference between a prostitute and a
politician? There are SOME things that a
prostitute won't do for money. . . "
Even though she often made light of the
political system, she was serious about the issues
she supported, issues beyond the decriminalization
of prostitution. She did not get elected but did
receive over 100,000 votes- which was not bad
considering she was a convicted felon hooker. She
noted somewhat ironically that if she had
been elected, she could have pardoned herself and
would not have had to spend 18 months in
prison.
